Imams told to educate Muslims on new constitution

Imams across the country will start educating faithful in civic education on bill of rights among other contents of the country's new constitution.

Council of Imams and Preachers (CIPK) directed its members across the country to use the daily five times prayers as platforms to inform followers on bill of rights as reflected in chapter four of the new constitution.

Nominated MP Sheikh Mohammed Dor who is also CIPK secretary general held meeting with 100 imams from Mombasa, Likoni, Changamwe and Kisauni districts and asked them to acclimatize with the new constitution.

"As leaders your have an integral responsibilities to inform ordinary citizen on the need of respecting this constitution we have all fought for as patriotic Kenyans for its realization," he told a press conference at the organization Mombasa offices.

He said soon after the end of the Holy month of Ramadhan, top CIPK officials will conduct forums in several parts of the country to educate more Muslims on their need to understand the new constitution accordingly.

The MP said they will use such forums to sensitize residents of the 48 counties on the need of electing suitable Governors and Senator who are people of integrity.

Sheikh Dor observed that Kenyans should take keen interest of putting the bill of rights on theor finger tips as a defensive weapon against government institutions and officials notorious in breaking laws.

He particularly called on senior police officers to make their juniors aware of the fundamental human rights as stated in the new constitution while in the course of discharging their duties of maintaining the country' security.

"In accordance to this new constitution, an arrested person has a right to be informed the cause of his arrest and police should execute the same politely and in an orderly way," he added.

The MP also called on Kenyans to end the culture of bribing public officers employed at the expense of their taxes in state agencies to offer them their rightful services.

"You should not go to immigration offices to bribe officers because that is a bad precedent to the new constitution and it is your right to get a passport without offering any inducement." he added.
