The evolution of typography is influenced by the publication including the printed version and the electronic version. The innovation of Mcsweeney’s shows the coexistence between the Web and the printed publication. Firstly, the writers in Mcsweeney’s has established many dominant writing styles. When it comes to the publication of Mcsweeney’s, Dave Eggers brought the typography to the public because there is staff in the Web 2.0 company in San Francisco, programmers in Bangalore. The business started obtaining sources from outside and changing the structure of the company. This collaboration style highlights the feature of the Web, which is “small pieces, loosely joined”(Knobel, L., Eggers, D., 2010, p.5). The publication of “Panorama” sold out rapidly for 20,000 at the first run and extra 20,000 at the second run. The sales prove the newspaper and the Web can survive together. “The Boatbuilder” by Daniel Gumbiner is the most interesting design to me. The designer uses the simple colour on this piece of art, which are green, black and white.
The quote, “A meditation on love, loyalty, and shared experience turn strangers into family.” follow the shape of the sunset, which integrates into the design work. Unlike other typography, the quote is placed in the separate area on the typography. I appreciate that the quote of “The Boatbuilder” merge with the design work and resonate with the readers. “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time”(Merton, T, 2018). is my favorite quote. I might find some photography of maze which symbolizes that people have to find their way to get out of the darkness and walk to the end. They have to use their creativity and wisdom to overcome challenges and obstacles at the same time. Art requires us to boost our creativity and wisdom as well.
