An effective leader needs to be seen as a proactive and decisive leader that is willing to take initiative to help make the team better. For example if clinical leadership hasn’t been visible, morale of the team is usually the first to be affected which in turn could potentially affect the quality of care. It has a knock on effect on almost everything that the team does so it is important to make the team aware that the leader is present and is doing his/her job.
A leader cannot be proactive or decisive without confidence. Effective leadership is requires self-confidence. If a leader is lacks the confidence to commit to his/her own decisions then it would make it incredibly difficult to achieve proposed goals and aspirations. For example: a leader could have problems with making commitments and constantly requires a qualifier to answer a serious question. Due to potential issues arising an effective leader needs to be adaptable to different situations and good at analysis. A leader needs to know how to control, allocate and monitor physical and human resources, communicate and coordinate with others inside and outside the organisation. If a leader can adapt to different situations and analyse what needs to be done then it will be easier to focus on achieving goals. An effective leader is ambitious in these goals. They all require careful planning, organising, setting objectives, learning, developing skills and following instructions. Effective leaders are good at persuading and inspiring others to give them the help and support they need to achieve their goals. EXAMPLE!!!!
A leader needs to be honest and reliable especially when it comes to giving, receiving and using feedback. Effective leaders are able to create a team where employees feel comfortable being able to speak out, for example if standards slip in terms of care. It is important for a leader to know how to listen, empathise and make people feel valued and cared for. It’s impossible to lead an organisation as a coercive or bullying leader.
When leaders show enthusiasm for the job that they are doing as well as a high energy approach it is likely to boost the morale of the team. When a leader is enthusiastic and energetic it can be very inspirational and motivating for the team. It allows them to visualise what their team will be under this person’s leadership. An Effective leader is imaginative and creative, able to inspire change and development, and they work with others to manage the different systems and operations to make their vision a reality. When enthusiasm is present, making rapport with the team is much easier as energised leaders are usually effective communicators. Communication is important both verbally and physically as body language reflects the passion and enthusiasm.
Effective leaders need to be able to motivate others and the best way to do so is to lead by example. If the leaders have great communication skills they will also be able to motivate others to train and receive mentorship. Effective leaders have vision and an ability to influence people. People unite behind them, which makes them valuable to an organisation. In healthcare people come from a variety of different backgrounds and schools, so people don’t come from an agreed standard.
