CRITICAL ANALYSIS
The company’s CSR initiatives usually involve setting the foundation of various programs at a small scale to learn from on ground realities, getting feedback from community and then putting an enhanced sustainable model to ensure maximum benefit to the community. One of reason during the year the company’s spend on the CSR activities has been less than the limits prescribed under Companies Act, 2013. The various ongoing CSR activities has also commenced 2 large scale initiatives which are the establishment of Anganwadi and setting up of water purification plants at various locations in the country.
Cairn India has undertaken several Carbon reduction initiatives. One such program is project Shrishti that is coordinated by their land team. They plan to increase the green cover by planting trees upto around 50% of the total area under their use. By 2013-14 the team had planted a total of 3.25 million trees over 497 hectares of land. At an assumed survival rate of 90 % these trees are expected to absorb around 4.3 million tons of carbon dioxide per year and with a lifetime expectancy of 60 years it comes out to be approximately 73,000 tonnes per year. This is approximately 7 % of their operational carbon footprint every year.
Their horticulture and agriculture program has been scaled up from 1,200 to 2,500 farmers by improving management of water using drip irrigation practices and increasing soil moisture retention through the use of “khadins”. Khadins are specialized water harvesting structures and they have helped build 143 such structures over 250 hectares of land. 60% of this barren land has now been brought under cultivation. These interventions have allowed farmers to practice multi-cropping and grow cash crops such as vegetables and mushrooms. This project has seen farmer incomes rise in the short time-period that it has been active. The Rural BPO that they had helped established in 2013 in Barmer city had now reached full capacity and employed 250 youth as compared to 100 last year.
The expansion of dairy cooperative program – enrolment of an additional 1,000 households and milk production has increased to 7,500 from 5,000 liters per day. In Gujarat, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, the reach of the safe drinking water program (“Jeevan Amrit”) doubled from 30,000 to 60,000 community members. Water consumption also increased 3.5 times from 24,000 to 90,000 liters per day. Safe drinking water is delivered to the consumers’ doorstep by introduction of solar-powered water kiosk and “Jal Rath” or “Water Chariot” started by their NGO partner and local entrepreneur has been instrumental. Through 13 “Jal Raths” they provided access to safe drinking water to more than 80 villages.
For Cairn India, waste management has also been an issue. There has been a 97% increase in the hydrocarbons discharged, in the produced water due to increase in production levels. In majority of the cases, the waste is treated and disposed off appropriately. However, the treated water is released back into the sea at offshore assets.
GEG (Gas Electric Generator) has been installed in Raageshwari well-pad, where 50% of the energy requirements for Saraswati well-pad are generated using captive solar PV technology. Solar Micro Grids are also installed as an alternate source. Meghwallon ki Dhani is one such solar micro-grid project installed at a village. Each household is connected to the 27 Kw capacity microgrid, through a transmission & distribution network that spans 6 Km. Each household is supplied with 100 feet of wires, 3-4 light points, and 2 sockets. The socket can be used to run TVs, charge mobile phones, fans and other electrical appliances. The project is also an example of the cross-pollination with other Cairn projects. At the Cairn Enterprise Centre (CEC) 10 electricians were trained as part of their On-the-Job Training (OJT).
Thus, Cairn India’s Sustainability approach has been overall satisfactory. However, considering its business they need to constantly contribute to Sustainability.
