Rebellion against authority is frequent throughout history, in the Old Testament, the Lord tells Joshua that “anyone who rebels against your command and does not obey your works in all that you command him, shall be put to death; only be strong and courageous”. The uprising of the rebellion in the Old Testament comes to show that a theocratic government is not always the greatest, it also shows this when Offred says “I keep the knowledge of the name like something hide, some treasure I’ll come back to dig up one day. I think of this name as buried” the author knows that this government will fall because of its restriction and reinforcement of rules, she knows it is going to fail because the system is not working so there always be a rebellion because it is human nature to fix something that is wrong. This two connect because since it is a theocratic government, the people of authority justify the hangings as okay because the Lord commanded Joshua to murder whoever rebels against him.
Since there are people who have tried to escape from the reality of their situation when Offred finds the note from a previous handmaid that says “Nolite te bastards carborandorum” gives hope to future handmaids because there will be an end to the Gildeadean regime, knows that there will be a rebellion because there is more power in numbers. This government constantly reinforces the idea that men are superior and downgrades women. While explaining how women are being treated, Offred states that “blue and green and cheap and skimp, that marks the women of the poorer men. Econowives, they’re called, these women are not divided into functions, they have to everything; if they can”. These women are not allowed to express themselves through how they dress. Humans express themselves through the way they dress, by taking that away, it takes away a part of their identity, the way they also do not speak of their real name and is called whatever their Commanders name shows that so much of their identity is being taken from them so they do not feel emotion and also shows that all these women are being used for business and restricts the way they live their life.
Another way they downgrade women is when Offred thinks to herself “All you have to do, I tell myself, is to keep your mouth shut stupid, it shouldn’t be that hard” (Atwood) all the women in this society have been verbally abused so much to a point where even the way they think about themselves and the way the Wives treat them like they are nothing without children.
The theocratic government does not even allow the people with high status with a life of pleasure “I want to be held and told my name. I want to valuable, I repeat my former name; remind myself of what … could do, how others saw me, I want to steal something” (Atwood) Offred is craving love and attention and wants the person she used to be back. They are not allowed to be touch or spoken to without authorization, they lack a basic human emotion with this, it is in a human’s nature to want to feel loved because one cannot live alone. To have fought for so many years about equality just to go back and not be treated like humans, just these machines that can bear children, she misses the other qualities that make her women not just that she can bear children.
